A home for all manner of species, from leopard to lion, buffalo to hippopotamus, the savannah lends itself perfectly to wildlife-spotting safaris, be it on foot, by vehicle, from the air, by boat or even by camel.
Across the continent, savannah includes the iconic destinations of South Africa’s Greater Kruger area and the outstanding private reserves in other parts of the country; the Okavango Delta in Botswana; the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania; and Kenya’s iconic Masai Mara. But step a little further off the well-worn path and you’ll discover truly wild and wonderful destinations in remote corners of Zambia, Kenya and Zimbabwe…
In Kenya, safaris are all about diversity. In the Masai Mara, classic game drives offer wildlife sightings worthy of a TV documentary, and in Laikipia a walking safari will allow you to see and feel the intricacies of the bush up close (and even encounter a rhino). Head even further north to take things up a notch and game view by camel or helicopter.
A safari in South Africa is not only about phenomenal wildlife-watching, but also an opportunity to understand what it takes to run a private reserve as well as the conservation battles and achievements. Enjoy hands-on experiences as well as classic game drives and walking safaris.
Beyond its coastline, Mozambique boasts untamed landscapes where safari enthusiasts can explore some of Africa’s most remote and rewarding wildlife areas. Gorongosa National Park, often called "Africa’s Eden," has seen a remarkable resurgence, with thriving populations of elephants, lions, and a diverse range of antelope species. Further north, Niassa Special Reserve spans over 42,000 square kilometers, providing sanctuary for wild dogs, leopards, and one of the largest elephant populations in the region. Offering game drives, walking safaris, and immersive conservation experiences, Mozambique is a destination for those seeking raw, authentic wilderness away from the crowds.
The South Luangwa is the home of the walking safari - and the leopard - and this is one of the best places on the continent to explore on foot. Combine a visit with the Lower Zambezi for elephant-filled game drives and magical scenery and you've got an all-round Zambian safari experience.
Step off the well-worn Southern Africa safari path and straight into Zimbabwe. In Hwange National Park, expect some of the best elephant viewing on the continent, either on game drives or from a log-pile hide as the herds congregate at the waterholes. Then, head to Mana Pools for stunning landscapes and water-based game viewing and round things off with a bucket-list must-visit, Victoria Falls.
