Botswana

Unbeatable. Intimate. Captivating.

The appeal of Botswana with its pristine, remote landscapes, transformative experiences and positive-impact travel, beats as strong as ever in the world of safaris.

In today’s world, privacy and access to space are the ultimate luxuries – and in Botswana, you can put a hefty tick next to both of them. From the juicy waterways and floodplains of the Okavango Delta that teem with wildlife to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and its surreal, moon-like scenery, a safari here is about discovering far-flung concessions in authentic camps and on mobile expeditions. The operators in Botswana have a shared mission to conserve these wild places, resulting in sustainable but thrilling experiences in one of the world’s most beautiful countries.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

One of the world’s most famous wildlife-viewing areas, the Okavango Delta is one of two UNESCO Heritage Sites in Botswana. Formed by the Okavango River spilling into the Kalahari Desert, it is a vibrant oasis in an otherwise dry landscape and intricate waterways carve out stunning scenery with crystal-clear lagoons, lush vegetation, and winding channels. This diverse ecosystem is home to a staggering variety of wildlife from elephants to hippos, numerous bird species, and an enormous number of predators.

Makgadikgadi Pans
A stark and otherworldly landscape of shimmering salt pans and exquisite camps unlike any other on the continent.

Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

The Makgadikgadi Pans are a mesmerising, otherworldly landscape formed from the remnants of an ancient super lake. Spanning across the heart of Botswana, the vast expanse is surreal and tranquil and the perfect setting for stargazing under and inky black sky, quad biking, guided walks, meeting habituated meerkats and learning how the local San Bushmen survive in such an inhospitable place. During the wet season, the pans transform into a lush wetland, attracting zebras, wildebeest, and flamingos.

More
Maun, Botswana

Located at the edge of the Okavango Delta, Maun is bustling hub of Land Rovers, safari enthusiasts and adventurers. It’s only the third largest town in the country but it’s the starting point for most travellers to Botswana and small safari planes buzz in and out all day long. It’s definitely not a requirement to stay overnight, but if you do find yourself in the area, enjoy traditional dance performances or cruise down the tranquil Thamalakane River. There are also plenty of modern amenities if you need to stock up on supplies.

A VAST Experience

Thanks to a largely conservation-focused model and government foresight to have as little impact on the environment as possible, experiences in Botswana are private and magical. Tourist numbers are purposely kept low and it’s rare to see one or even two other vehicles on a game drive. Instead, you’ll enjoy intimate sightings that will surpass almost any other on the continent amongst a Noah’s Ark of wildlife. Game drives are big news, allowing you to cover as much distance as possible, but walking safaris in these remote landscapes are key to connecting with nature. Mokoro safaris offer a different perspective on the wildlife and cultural experiences with the San bushmen and poignant and fascinating.

What you might know...

Mobile expeditions in Botswana are, quite simply, phenomenal. Often run by small, owner-led operators, they strip back the trappings of over-designed luxury accommodation and offer life-changing experiences where being wild and free is front and centre.

What you might not know....

The number of camps in each of the Delta’s pristine concessions is limited by the government in order to protect the ecosystems as much as possible – which for you means intimate experiences in acres of land that feel like your own.
